Historical Reference Documents
In 1956, the 11th Airborne Division of the US Army in West Germany first proposed the concept of Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) and its necessity to patrol the East German border area. The US 7th Army in Germany officially launched the program on June 9, 1961.
The 3780th (Airborne) LRRP Company and the 3779th (Airborne) LRRP Company were established on July 15, 1961. These companies were assigned to the VII Corps and the V Corps, respectively. These two units are monumental in military history as they correspond to the original roots of what would later become the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 75th Ranger Regiment.
In 1965, the units established specific organization and equipment charts suitable for the LRRP mission. On May 15, 1965, the 3780th was reorganized into Company C (LRRP), 58th Infantry (Airborne), and the 3779th became Company D (LRRP), 17th Infantry (Airborne). Under this structure, key leadership—including search team leaders, platoon commanders, and company officers—were selected exclusively from those who had completed Ranger training, while all company members were required to be Airborne qualified.
On February 1, 1969, these LRRP companies were reorganized into the 75th Ranger Companies A and B, eventually expanding into the 1st and 2nd Ranger Battalions in 1974.
